DHS, Custom Border Protection Doubles Donations!

First-time Coordinator Cynthia Pelfrey set the bar high when she took on CFC responsibilities for this campaign.  Her strategy included the Port Director's endorsement, coverage in their agency newletter, a silent auction for Portland Trailblazers tickets, a Kickoff with a charity speaker, and CFC posters around the building advertising the campaign.

The most popular event was the Halloween Costume Contest, where non-uniform personnel dressed up and other employees voted with raffle tickets on the scariest and most imaginative costumes.  You can see that folks went all out to win this one!

Thanks to Cynthia and the generosity of her office, their campaign totals have doubled and their number of donors has tripled!

Salem BLM Posts Nearly 50% Increase in Campaign Totals

BLM Salem
Agency leadership, coordinators, and employees at Salem BLM have put in a fantastic campaign effort, and they are now seeing the results.  Their campaign has so far increased donations by almost 50% from last year's totals!

Campaign Coordinator Randy Gould organized a six-person CFC team that their CFC Specialist described as "energetic, resourceful, and highly competitive."  They planned a series of events that ensured that BLM employees knew the campaign was taking place, heard from participating charities, and had fun!

District Manager Aaron Horton kicked off the campaign with a letter to employees and a presentation with charity representatives.  Fundraisers included a burrito feast, an ice cream parlor, a prize drawing, and a media sale.  Campaign progress was tracked by a large CFC Goal Thermometer.

Good luck to this agency as they close their campaign!

In-Kind Donations Gathered by SSA, Teleservice Center

SSAAs you can see in the picture at right, the employees at the Social Security Administration, Teleservice Center raised much more than money during this year's campaign.  Led by coordinator Gloria Halliday, this office raised awareness about the issue of homelessness among youth by collecting and donating items that could be used by someone experiencing homelessness.  The items were donated to CFC member charity Janus Youth Programs.

Congratulations to this office for their creative campaign to raise awareness and donations for a particular cause!

Game Time at Forest Service, Columbia River Gorge NSA

Columbia River Gorge NSAColumbia River Gorge 2If you've ever been nostalgic for some of the childhood games you played growing up, then this office's latest CFC event would have been right up your alley.  For only $5 per day employees in this Forest Service office could test their memories and try their skills at a variety of competitions that ran Monday through Friday.

The events were Darts, Casting into a Bucket, Bean Bag Toss and Airplane contest.  At the end of each day there were four winners, one for the highest score of darts, one for casting with a fishing rod into a bucket, one for total number of hole-in-one bean bags, and the last for the furthest paper airplane thrown.  With only a handful of people playing each day this office raised $150!  Not only that, but employees are now ready to show off their skills at the next school fair or carnival they attend.

Next up for this office:  a Waffle Breakfast and Oral Auction for some great Theme Baskets (pictured).  Thanks again to coordinators Melissa Hayes and Pattiann Monzie for all their efforts on the campaign.

Halloween Fun at BPA

BPA Bake SaleBPA bake sale 2BPA employees in Vancouver were treated to some Halloween fun as part of their campaign this year.  Sugary treats were sold as part of a bake sale, there was a pumpkin-carving contest, and a costume contest wrapped up the festivities.

For the pumpkin-carving contest participants carved fake pumpkins (no mess!) and employees "voted" by contributing to the jar on the table of the pumpkin they liked most.  The carvers also got to keep their pumpkins.

Other campaign events include an online auction, teddy bear drive, hoop shoot challenge, cosmic golf, silent gift basket auction, and letters from Santa Clause.

Thanks to Kelly Torres and her CFC team for their efforts at BPA!

VA Toll Troll Raises Money for CFC

VA Toll TrollTroll posterIf you work at the VA Medical Center or OHSU, chances are that you pass through one of the two skybridges during your day.  The VA Medical Center CFC team is taking advantage of the traffic in these skybridges to raise money for the CFC.  A CFC Troll stands guard and asks passers-by for a toll, which goes to the CFC.  It was fitting that this fundraiser began on Halloween!

Other CFC events are C4 (Creative Cooking Competition for Charity), a charity fair, various drawings (if you've been to the VA, you understand how important the parking space drawing is!), grab bags, a donut cart, and ice cream and popcord at CFC tables in the Atrium.  One popular fundraiser is the jail, where employees can purchase warrants for supervisors, who then have to raise a certain amount of money from passers-by to be released from the jail.

Special thanks to CFC Coordinator Chris Galster and his CFC team for their efforts on this campaign!

Federal Highway Administration, Western Lands Division Kicks Off Campaign

FHA TeamFHA Match the LegFederal Highway, West Lands Division kicked off their campaign with a schedule of events that includes some old favorite as well as something new. Employees had the opportunity to contribute to the CFC through a Silent Auction, Guess the Baby Picture, Coin Jar Competition, Dart Throw, Bake Sale, and visits from member charities.

But one activity showed a whole new side of their fellow employees:  the Match The Leg Contest.  In this event employees showed off their legs while their co-workers guessed who the legs belonged to.  Even with just their legs showing these employees showed personality, as you can see in the photo at right.

Charity speakers at this office included Kimberly Mounts, from Willamette Humane Society with Petri the dog and her handler Lynn, as well as Joe Sixta from Human Solutions.  Also in on the fun was Division Engineer Clara Connor, who donned a festive CFC baseball cap that lights up.

CFC and the California Wildfire Relief Effort

Many of us have been riveted by the news coverage of the terrible Southern California wildfires which destroyed thousands of homes and forced more than half a million people to evacuate their communities.  If you would like to contribute to the relief effort with your CFC contribution, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) advises you to visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s website at http://www.fema.gov/rebuild/recover/howtohelp.shtm. This website lists find references to voluntary organizations which are providing relief services.  Many of these organizations also participate in the CFC and donors may want to consider giving via payroll deduction through the CFC to these organizations as a means for long-term support to assist these organizations in replenishing their reserves.  Donors can look up the organizations in their National and Local CFC Charity Lists to determine which organizations are participating in the CFC where the employee’s official duty station is located.

Fish & Wildlife, Columbia River FPO Holds New Fundraiser

TapeTape2The employees at this federal office have set a new standard for creative fundraising for the CFC!  This year they held a campaign event called "Duct Tape Your Boss to the Wall."  How did this activity benefit CFC?  Employees could purchase duct tape by the yard for 50 cents, then they could also place bets as to how long the boss would stick to the wall after the stool was removed.

Special thanks to Diane Grantier for her role as Campaign Coordinator, Donna Allard for thinking up this idea and purchasing supplies, and Howard Schaller for being stuck to the wall!

BPA Hosts Charities

BPA Charity CarnivalBPA Charity Carnival-2Local charities had the opportunity to share stories and information about the work they do when they attended Bonneville Power Administration's Charity Carnivals.  A total of elevent non-profit agencies were able to attend the event, which took place last week.

It is always exciting to hear about the excellent work that charities in our campaign are doing here in Oregon, in the United States, and abroad.  Thanks to Kelly Torres for her efforts coordinating this event, and as always thank you to our member charities for the work you do.

Forest Service, Columbia Gorge NSA Campaign Off and Running

Silent auctionHelping HandsThe creative coordinators at this the Forest Service Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area have planned another year of fun and unique events for their campaign.  The schedule includes a spaghetti lunch, Helping Hands race, and a silent auction, with more to come!

During the Helping Hands race music is turned on the intercom at random times during the day, and employees race to put their hands on large numbered handprints posted around the office.   If their number is chosen they receive a prize donated by a business in their community.  During the silent auction employees can bid on donated items to raise money for the CFC.

Special thanks to Melissa Hayes and Pattiann Monzie for their work as CFC coordinators for this office.  They are already reporting fundraising success with these events!

Animals Showcased at Tri-Agency Opening Ceremonies

Opening CeremoniesOpening Ceremonies2Employees at the Portland BLM, Forest Service, and Army Corps of Engineers offices got to meet charity speakers of both the two- and four-legged variety at their Opening Ceremonies on Wednesday.  Fifteen CFC charities were invited to attend, and three of those charities brough canine representatives.

Coordinator Joe Lapeyre started the ceremony by showing the CFC Video, and then attendees were treated with remarks by Liz Agpaoa, Deputy Regional Forester for the Forest Service, Lynda Stelzer, Deputy State Director for Management Services for the Bureau of Land Management, and Colonel Thomas O'Donnovan, Commander for the Portland District US Army Corps of Engineers.  Colonel O'Donnovan brought his own dog, Leo, to join in the festivities and show off some tricks.

Thanks to the tri-agency CFC coordinator team of Joe Lapeyre, Stacia Nunn, Gail Lovell, Jose Linares, Wendy Reeder, and Charles Hill for planning this fun event.  Upcoming activities include a walk around the Esplanade and chili feed.
